India: Wild elephants go bananas in fruit plantations
Wild elephants have destroyed banana and coconut crops near the Nellimalai hills in the Badrakaliamman Temple area in Mettuppalayam.
Farmers reported that over the last week damage has been caused to nearly 3,000 banana crops. Damage to coconut trees was less extensive.
Forest officials have asked anti-poaching watchers to try and prevent the herd from again straying onto agricultural land.
