Carl van de Wiel (Agro Centre Holland):
NL: "More movement in red onion market"
Agro Centre Holland is a company that specialises in producing, processing and selling red onions and shallots. The company is in Langeweg, close to the city of Breda. The company belongs to Carl van de Wiel, who started the company himself ten years ago. "There is more and more movement in the red onion market. After a few difficult months in red onions, it's seems to be improving", says Carl.

"The demand is mainly from our surrounding countries. The sales to far away destination has been bad for the past few months and has lagged behind compared to previous years. The production of pink onions, especially from India, China and Holland are in the way of the far destinations. The current sales to these countries are becoming more difficult and are very dangerous with current quality", continues Carl.
"The demand is increasing, but so is the supply. At the moment there is a lot of supply, so the prices probably won't go up any time soon. If Eastern Europe starts to move soon, that might change quickly. But we don't know if this will happen", says Carl.

"The quality of the red onions is at an all time low this year. Tarra percentages of over 30% are no exception. The first months of the season this tarra was hard to read. Now that we're a bit further in the season, the bad onions are becoming more visible and the end result is better. The fact that the average quality is low, doesn't mean that no good parties can be found. They are there, but you have to look for them more this year", says Van de Wiel.

"We will probably be more clear about our expectations of the coming months after Fruit Logistica. We will have a stall there for the first time in our existence, in between all the other Dutch companies and all those interested are of course welcome. As a preview you can check out our new website www.red-onion.com
Perhaps we'll see you in Berlin."
