A growing market for Peru’s organic products
In Peru, some 274,000 hectares of land were managed according to organic standards in 2005, which makes it one of the larger organic producer countries in Latin America. The areas dedicated to organic cultivation could mainly be found in Madre de Dios and Cuczo. Almost 33,500 organic farmers were active in the organic sector in the same year.
A high percentage of products was exported, worth US $101 million. The annual growing rate of exports is 49 % and this development is expected to continue. In 2007, exported products are predicted to be worth more than US $150 million. The main markets for Peru’s organic products in 2006 were Europe and North America (62 % and 35 %).
Exports to Europe were worth US $63 million in 2006 (compared with 56 % in 2005). Exports to Germany increased by 50 % last year, to Belgium by 117 %, to the Netherlands by 50 % and to Great Britain by 169 %. Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands mainly bought coffee and bananas. Great Britain imported Brazil nuts, mango, cocoa, maca, tomatoes and peppers. Peru is the most important exporter for organic coffee worldwide.
A variety of specialist information about organic growing, production and export is available in Spanish via the website of the official export promotion agency Prompex. Particularly the production of bananas, mangos and cocoa is shown in detail.
