Premier Star apples New Zealand’s latest star attraction

Twelve years after it first appeared as a curious branch on a Royal Gala tree in a Nelson home orchard, Premier Star (PVR) was exported successfully for the first time in 2011 to Singapore and Thailand. Premier Star has naturally high sugars and an outstanding block bright red colour that is packed to a 70%+ colour spec premium – a combination that perfectly suits the Asian market preferences.

DMP the exclusive marketing agent along with Greg and Stephanie Buck, the variety’s owners, were happy to see a favourable market response. Importers commented the “bright red colour stood out on supermarket shelves” with wholesale customers rating Premier Star a “A+ for taste, sweetness and skin quality”.

Despite its parentage, Premier Star has been compared to the New Zealand Pacific series, particularly the Beauty apple, although Premier Star has the added advantage of a firm skin ensuring it handles and stores well without any bruising/puncture issues. 2011 sales went well with Premier Star fetching an excellent variety average return well and above Royal Gala, and without any promotion.

2012 shipments are almost underway with the variety having natural early maturity, enabling shipping in February. DMP are looking forward to expanding into new markets and building on developing the brand and premium. To assist in this, Premier Star has its own branding, export carton and as of 2012, its own PLU label ensuring that it stands apart from the rest!”
