DR: Growing demand for organic bananas in the United States and Europe

Organic farming is a form of production that has been gaining ground in the Dominican Republic so much so that it is now placed as the leading exporter of organic bananas worldwide.

Official figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture, indicate that exports of organic products were placed at around USD$ 200 million per year.

The Ministry notes that in the agricultural area people can see the sustained growth of the organic agriculture sub-sector that has been growing at a rate of 25% and 30% each year, especially in the cultivation of organic cocoa.

Among the major organic products that are sold abroad by the Dominican Republic there are: mango, lemon, coconut, avocado, vegetables, bitter cassava, melon, cocoa and bananas, the last two exports representing U.S. $ 174 million a year.
Banana exports represented USD$ 64 million.

Vice President of the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD), Osmar Benitez said that after the countries of Europe and the United States began to demand products whose production is environmentally friendly, the Dominican Republic began to increase planting areas and promote exports of organic foods.

"With the new rules of the European Commission in 1992 and competition from Ecuador, which was the main exporter of organic bananas, the Dominican Republic began to promote exports of organic bananas," he said.
