US: Publix opens prototype store at Cross Country Plaza
Columbus residents streamed through the doors, grabbed carts and began shopping Wednesday morning after the new Publix in Cross Country Plaza opened.
The 54,340-square-foot store replaced the Publix located in the same shopping center. Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and Jim Evans, manager of the new store, cut the ribbon before 7 a.m. as about 100 people, some of whom had arrived as early as 5 a.m., looked on.
Evans then presented fresh flowers to customers as they entered the store, while Publix employees scattered throughout the building to offer shoppers food samples, including french toast with pralines.
The new Publix, which is the grocery chain’s latest prototype, has 17,000 more square feet than the previous location and features expanded wine, produce and floral departments. The produce department will carry organic and traditionally grown fruits and vegetables.
The new store also features a drive-thru pharmacy.
