Stemilt’s PIÑATA! displays its good taste with Sesame Street charm at produce show

Who’s the apple of your eye? For Sesame Street’s Elmo and Abby Cadabby, it’s PIÑATA! The new apple variety is being described as a “party of flavor for your mouth” and a “surprise for your taste buds.”

PIÑATA! is exclusively packed and marketed in North America by Wenatchee-based tree-fruit shipper Stemilt Growers. Stemilt purchased the exclusive rights to the reddish-pink variety in 2004. PIÑATA!, which was discovered by German fruit researchers, is a cross between the Golden Delicious, Cox’s Orange Pippin and Duchess of Oldenburg varieties.

PIÑATA! is a word usually associated with the brightly-colored party favors that spill delicious treats for party-goers. Stemilt Growers Marketing Director Roger Pepperl said PIÑATA! bears some resemblance to its festive, colorful namesake. Stemilt played upon that theme in merchandising displays created for retailers who conduct PIÑATA! promotions. It features Elmo and Abby Cadabby, Sesame Street’s resident fairy in training.

“PIÑATA! is a sweet, juicy apple with a magical hint of berry and watermelon flavors,” Pepperl said. “That’s why we say PIÑATA! is a surprise for your taste buds.”

Stemilt is also using the slogan, “A party of flavor for your mouth” on bright-red shipping cartons that double as a colorful merchandising unit. The carton lid can be removed and placed on the floor to serve as the unit base. Two Euro footprint-sized flats of apples, which can hold bulk fruit or bags, are stacked together and placed atop the base to create a three-tiered display.

Pepperl said the units will stack on a pallet just like regular Euro-sized cartons. The carton-turned-display reduces cardboard waste and saves on extra shipping costs that are sometimes necessary to transport display materials. Stemilt will showcase the PIÑATA! carton and decorative display materials at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit trade show. Stemilt will have a sample display with the new program materials featured at their booth, #2443.

“This makes set-up very easy for produce managers and staff,” Pepperl said. “All they need to do is remove the lid, stack the shipping trays, and they finish two tasks at once.”

Sesame Workshop®, the creators of Sesame Street, has partnered with Stemilt on several promotions now, including programs around cherries and a variety of apples. Elmo has been encouraging children and their families to eat healthy fruits like cherries for the past two years. This fall, Sesame Workshop and Stemilt have also teamed up to encourage the consumption of pears.

“The Sesame Street gang has been entertaining and educating kids since 1969,” Pepperl said. “They are recognized for teaching children about good health, and our tree fruits fit well with those teachings.”

Sesame Workshop® has a program to encourage children and their families to lead healthy lives. Healthy Habits for Life®, which began in 2004, promotes health, nutrition, physical activity, and education to preschoolers and their caregivers.

Maura Regan, Vice President and General Manager of Sesame Workshop’s Global Licensing, said, “It’s tremendously rewarding to continue growing our Healthy Habits for Life program. The more variety of delicious fruits and vegetables that we can introduce to children to, the more they’ll be encouraged to eat well.”

Packaging and materials featuring Big Bird, Elmo and Cookie Monster will also be used for Stemilt’s other apple varieties. Retailers can order shelf wrap, tote bags, mesh bags, and tri-wall bins that include the three.

Pepperl said along with the new display-shipper for PIÑATA! retailers will also receive 11-by-7 shelf cards inside each box designed with the apple variety, Elmo, and Abby Cadabby.
