UK: Local scientists making it easier to understand juice healthiness
A Cambridge-based company is developing a technique to quantify the healthy components in cranberry juice. Currently, neither juice companies nor customers have a good way to compare the healthiness of one juice to another. In cranberry juice, proanthocyadins are the the chemicals that can help reduce the risk of urinary tract infection. Since they are small and vary in structure it is difficult to evaluate just how many grams are in cranberry products. Cranberry juices also contain sweeteners and other additives that dilute the mixture.
Based in Cambridge and Madison, Complete Phytochemical Solutions is developing a procedure to measure the chemicals. While they have a few months to a year of work left, they hope their work will lead to consistent claims by those producing cranberry products. "What we're doing right now is to develop a standard derived from the cranberries themselves looking at the components that are important and then making that commercially available to the industry, to academics, to researchers," said Operations Manager Chris Krueger.
