Very low consumption in Italy
Pear production forecast in Europe

During the 3rd European Fruit Summit, held in Cesena on 4th October, 2011, Elisa Macchi of CSO showed the forecast for 2011 pear production.
EU-27 pear production is stable at 2.5 million tons. In 2011 the expected European supply will be on average levels, after the low yields in 2010. Expected production is 2,533,000 tons, 12% more than 2010 and a 6% increase compared to the average 2007-2010.
EU-27 pears: 2011 forecasts per country

As for the forecast in the main EU producing countries, Italy shows "normal" levels in terms of volume in 2011, 886,000 tons (+30% than 2010 and +1% on the average 2006-2009).
In Spain a decreasing trend is noted, from 600,000 tons to the current 427,000 tons (-7% than 2010 and -8% compared to 2007-2010 average).
Decrease for pears also in France: from more than 250,000 tons to 170,000 tons in the last two years. 2011 forecast speaks about 176,000 tons, that is a 7% increase compared to 2010 and a 5% decrease compared to 2007-2010 average.
Upward trend in Portugal, from 140,000 tons today we can note more than 200,000 tons. In fact, forecast indicates 210,000 tons, a 22% increase compared to 2010 and a +25% than 2007-2010 average.
Dutch pears grow too. From 180,000 tons in 2000 to the current 300,000 tons, a 12% increase compared to 2010 and a +21% on the 2007-2010 average.
In Belgium pear growing has intensified, from 170,000 to 308,000 tons (+8% on 2010 and +17% on 2007-2010 average).

Italian pears: retail purchases.

As for retail purchases, in Italy pears are the most affected product by consumption crisis. From 2000 to 2010 we could see a 20% decrease, from 459,000 to 369,000 tons. In particular, in 2010 purchases are decreased with a further 1.2% compared to 2009.
In the first six months of 2011 194,457 tons were sold compared to 198,419 tons in 2010 (-2%), but the price of 1 kg of pears noted a slight increase (+2%), from €1.59 in 2010 to €1.62.
Pears in Russia: imports from EU-27

In the end, Elisa Macchi showed the Russian situation. In 2010 Russia imported more than 243,000 tons of pears from EU, mainly from Belgium (more than 130,000 tons), then from The Netherlands (more than 40,000 tons), Lithuania and Spain. Italy is at the last place with less than 200 tons.

- Conference: from 600,000 to about 889,000 tons (+8% than 2010 and +12% compared to 2007-2010 average).
- Abate: usually on 280,000 tons, in 2011 will reach the producing record in the last 10 years, 370,000 tons (+66% compared to 2010 and +23% compared to 2007-2010 average).
- Williams: compared to 2000 a decrease is noted. In 2011 forecast is 307,000 tons (+8% than 2010 and +1% compared to 2007-2010 average).
- Rocha: upward trend from 120,000 tons in 2000 to 209,000 tons in 2011 (+22% than 2010 and +24% compared to 2007-2010 average).
