Canadian cherry update June 15
Canada: Cool spring will delay harvest
The season is progressing slowly due to our unusually cool spring. British Columbia Cherry Growers expecting a 5-10 day later than usual start with the longest delay in the South Okanagan. We are seeing a very good set and sizing in the Osoyoos region. Set is lighter through Oliver however which should result in some very good size throughout July. It is unlikely we will have any significant volume July 1st promotions but this will depend a lot on the weather over the next two weeks.
Our Grower’s in Kelowna have a very nice set and we should see normal volume and sizing. We have had a longer than usual bloom in the North Okanagan region and this will likely cause a slightly heavier drop. There is very good fruit spacing across British Columbia and we expect nice sizing and excellent fruit quality. Our grower’s invested in the first UniTec Optical Sorter in North America prior to last season and we have been very impressed with the results. In a season where there is a delayed bloom the Optical Machine color sorting ability becomes invaluable to produce beautiful uniform packs. It eliminates salt and pepper colorations usually found in seasons with drawn out bloom. It is also a necessity to select uniform maturity in each box as Global Fruit extends our season with ocean shipments through September.
The Creston Valley has as close to perfect of a set as we have seen in the past few years. With a heavier than normal crop perfectly spaced across the trees we are expecting a great August from Creston. We are currently still 14 days behind the rolling average and our Agronomist has predicted a 5-6 day harvest delay. We will not start picking until the first week of August. Last season our late orchards in Creston first harvest took place August 29-30. This season we expect to harvest through September 5th. We are very happy that the forecast for the Creston Valley is a beautiful dry summer after the rain events of the past three years.

All of Global Fruit’s Growers and packinghouses will be undergoing their annual Global Good Agricultural Practices Audits June 21-30. The GLOBALG.A.P standard is primarily designed to reassure consumers about how food is produced on the farm by minimising detrimental environmental impacts of farming operations, reducing the use of chemical inputs and ensuring a responsible approach to worker health and safety as well a Produce Handling addendum to ensure postharvest handling and harvest meets Food Safety’s Best Practices.
Global Fruit Has taken the position that we will only market for Grower’s and Packer’s committed to maintaining this worldwide standard which is recognized in over 80 countries. All of our partner packinghouses complete and maintain the Produce Handling addendum. PrimusLabs, a certification body from California will be administering the audits this season.
