US: Launch of agricultural hydroponics program
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it will provide $12m to fund a five-year program that aims to improve agricultural output in Lebanon. The Developing Hydroponics to Access International Markets (DHAIM) project aims to establish a high-value fruit, vegetables and flowers hydroponic sector by strengthening horticulture export market linkages.
According to the USAID, DHAIM will address the developmental challenges of the fresh fruits and vegetables sector. The project aims to increase access to external markets; raise the competitiveness of the greenhouse sector; increase business linkages; the adoption of best agricultural practices; improve marketing, decision-making and risk management; and increase access to credit for SMEs. It said the hydroponics method improves crop flexibility and quality control and allows the production of specific crops with higher, stable and long-term returns. It mitigates many climatic constraints and is less dependent on seasons as conventional farming methods.
The project will be implemented by ACDI/VOCA, a private, nonprofit organization that promotes broad-based economic growth in developing countries, as well as seven local sub-partners.
