Mexico: A new hybrid of Papaya Sweet Sensation sent to US

The Mexican producers of papaya invested in genuine seeds to increase their exports with sizes and the sweetness that markets ask for. "It's a new hybrid called Sweet Sensation, it's smaller, odourless, uniform in colour and it's sweeter; fulfilling the demand of market in United States and Canada and will potentiate exports", commented Francisco Mora, President of the Comité Nacional del Sistema - Produto Papaya (department that brings together all the productive chain of this fruit).
This new variety started its commercial seeding in the state of Colima, by the company Red Starr and the first containers have already been shipped to United States, were the success is expected.
"Only 5% of the US population consumes the Maradol variety of Papaya, but with this variety we can increase our participation in the market over the next 3 years", predicted Francisco Mora. Papaya is mainly exported to the North and South America, but Europe is already having the first try-outs.
(Total exports of Papaya in tons)
2005 - 77,214
2007 - 97,889
2009 - 134,086
2010 - (Ene-sep) 101,752
