US: New variety of tomatoes

New varieties of tomatoes have been created by Indian- origin scientists in the US. The tomatoes are claimed to have a longer life than the usual ones.

As reported by a famous Journal, it is found that the tomatoes, if added with some yeast genes can stay fresh longer. Their ageing slows down and also delays the microbial decay in them.

It has been shown earlier that the organic compounds like spermidine and spermine enhance the quality of the fruits; they also enhance the nutritional value of fruits like tomatoes. These help in reducing the ageing of the fruits. The roles it can perform are not fully studied, but compounds like these are great.

Products like spermidine increase the shelf life of the fruit. If the fruit starts looking wrinkled no one is eager to buy the fruit. It should be in a good condition, so polyamines like these should be added to increase their life and help them stay fresh for longer period of time. It also increases the quality of the product.

All tomato growers look for tomatoes which have a high shelf life.
