Germany: 20 tons of tomatoes daily from new tomato greenhouse Schkölen

Tastery, Delicioso and Juanita are the names of the three cherry tomato varieties , which grow in the new 8,8 HA organically heated tomato hothouse in Schkölen. The greenhouse with a total investment of 11 million Euro, was opened recently in a festive manner. In total 55 full-time employees and 25 seasonal workers are employed. The first tomatoes were planted on 6th January this year and the first crop was harvested on 26th March. Since April, 450 tons of tomatoes have been harvested, the annual objective being 2,800 tons. This is according to director Peter Winkler.

Schkölen is situated on the border of Saxony-Anhalt. The idea for the greenhouse project started in 2006. After a long period of preparation construction started in April 2009, and was completed in a record time of seven months. The residue heat from the installation is now put to good use in growing tomatoes. The heat drives the computer and controls the climate, so that 155,000 tomato plants can grow under the best conditions.

An automated energy awning provides shade from strong sunlight and saves energy during the night. Rainwater from the roofs is collected in an enormous storage tank of 7,800 m2 and used for watering the tomatoes.

In the hall in which the tribute with more than 100 guests took place, cooling cells have been built to cool the fruit quickly. The harvest is transported the same day from Schkölen to Laasdorf and there packed in 250 and 500 gr. trays. Amongst others Lidl is one of the clients.
