European demand exceeds supply of Sicilian organic avocados

The Sicilian organic avocado conquers Europe thanks to Agrinova   Bio 2000, the organisation of organic growers in Acireale (Sicily). The most important gain is in the accounts of growers, who invested in the Hass-variety, in which Agrinova Bio 2000 also had a share. In addition Agrinova has also sorted and packed the product with great attention. Under the trade-mark Terra Viva the avocados are sold in the U.K., Belgium, Germany, France and Switzerland.



"Since April we have sold 20,000 kgs of avocados. The product comes from the organic area of a grower in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia in the Catania province", as per marketing manager Marcello  Eberle of Agrinova.
 
The producers price (excluding processing and packing) is between 1,70 and 1,80 Euro/kg. The average trade price is 2,20 Euro/kg carriage paid. The product is packed in 4kg boxes of 14-22 avocados.



"Consumers like this product and as a result the demand is larger than our supply. Our European clients have already confirmed our supply of the 2011 season" a satisfied Eberle concludes.  
 
Agrinova Bio finds the avocado cultivation a good alternative for the growth of citrus, as this sector finds itself in a long-lasting crisis in the area between Acireale
and Fiumefreddo di Sicilia. The organisation wants to increase the supply of Hass avocadoes in 2011 and start competing with Spain, which occupies an important position on the European avocado market.
