Italy: La Costiera exports 'Limone di Sorrento' to Scandinavia

The Italian company 'La Costiera' is becoming more and more important as an international player on the market. The 'Limone di Sorrento' (lemon from Sorrento) is on the way to  Northern Europe and Scandinavia.

Costiera turnover, which amounted to 8,5 million Euros during 2009. "We expect to double this within a year" says Fernando 
Vinaccia, sales manager of La Costiera. "At the moment we export to England, Germany and the Netherlands, but we are looking for new potential markets, such as Denmark, Sweden and Finland."

In order to reach the target La Costiera have planned an investment of a million Euros in the next two years (2010-2011). Half a million Euros has been budgeted to improve the factory in Fondi. This factory is 7,000 m2 in size (2,200 m2 under cover) and has been fitted with all technologies, which control the entire production handling.

"Within two months we will install a new innovative processing line, with electronic equipment to wash and brush the lemons and to determine the fruit size" Vinaccia says. The new line will increase the product handling from 30 tons per day to 30 tons per hour.


Sorting and picking

Because of the expected growth in production, especially the export to foreign countries, La Costiera will enter into 'gentlemen agreements' with more than a hundred fruit and vegetable growers in Southern Italy (Campania, Apulia, Calabria and Sicily regions). At the end of 2010 there will be 200 companies cooperating with La Costiera.
 
The other half million Euros of the investment will be used to strengthen the marketing outlets and the marketing of innovations.

La Costiera, founded in the sixties by Camilla Maresca and Luigi Vinaccia from Sorrento produce and sell 'Limone di Sorrento'. At the moment  brothers Nicola and
Ferdinando Vinaccia are running the company and they built the factory in Fondi in 2008. The 'Limone di Sorrento' is a lemon with an oval shape and weighs 85 grams. It has a yellow and perfumed rind and the pulp is yellow and juicy, which is rich in vitamin C.
 


La Costiera own 20 hectares of lemons in Sorrento (Campania), Roccalumera and Noto (Sicily). It processes more than 100,000 kgs of citrus annually (including citrus from Chile, Argentina and South Africa) The total company turnover amounted to 8,5 million Euros.

The 'Limone di Sorrento' has been registered as a Protected Geographic Indication. It is available from March to September and is always sold with leaf. Various packings are available to the client.

In addition to 'Limone di Sorrento'  La Costiera have lemons from Sicily, such as 'Primofiore' (end of September to end of November) and 'Invernale' (December to April), 'Bianchetto' (April to May), 'Verdello' (June to September) in the assortment, In addition La Costiera sell lemons from Chile, Argentina and South Africa.
