Carrefour - all Belgium stores open thursday
French retail giant Carrefour SA Thursday said all of its stores are open in Belgium for the first day since Feb. 27, a Carrefour spokesman said Thursday.
Carrefour's plans to restructure its Belgian operations, freeze salaries, cut jobs and close stores prompted worker protests and walk-outs throughout the week and the company met extensively with unions Wednesday.
Carrefour will hold further meetings with worker representatives March 8 and 10. Union-organized strikes which resulted in 117 closed stores Saturday cost the company around EUR14 million. The company has declined to comment further on the cost of additional store closures this week.
Spontaneous walk-outs that weren't organized by the unions resulted in three store closures Monday, two on Tuesday and five on Wednesday.
The Carrefour spokesman added the unions so far haven't called for additional strikes.
