EU: More farmers growing organic crops
The amount of farmland in the EU that is being used to grow organic produce grew by 7% year-on-year in 2008, according to official data from Eurostat. The study found that organic farming land in the 27-member EU was up to 7.8 million hectares, indicating a 21% rise from 2005.
The most commonly grown organic crop was cereals (44% of all land was used for this purpose), followed by green fodder (42%). Fresh vegetables and industrial crops accounted for 4%, while crops such as dried pulses, potatoes and arable seeds accounted for 6%.
Spain had the largest area of land converted to organic farming, followed by Italy, Germany, the UK and France.
