Asda to trial new packaging in the UK
Asda are having at their Barnsley, UK, supermarket, a trial of reusable fabric conditioner packaging, this is together with McBrides, Unilever and eziserv, and has been funded by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme). The trial is to test the viability of reusable packaging on a variety
of goods, from laundry products to paint, four other Asda stores will be involved in the testing.
Richard Swannell, director of retail at WRAP said that this was an opportunity to 'fundamentally rethink' the retail experience. He added that the industry is watching this trial with a gret deal of interest, because there are clear opportunities for reusable packaging in relation to all manner of products.
The dispensing technology for fabric conditioner is supplied by eziserv, which they believe could save on transport, storage and space in-store. A 1,000 litre container in the back of the store would have pipes to a dispenser, which would fill pouches that can be used 10 times, and would save customers 40p each time.
Asda's head of sustainability, Julian Walker-Palin said that this project directly engages with consumers by offering a great product, which not only has a lower packaging footprint, but also a lower price tag, due to the reduced environmental footprint.
The final results on the testing and economic opportunities will be reported in the autumn.
