US: Domex Superfresh Fruits have a 'big' harvest

The Kershaw family pioneered Eastern Washington in 1880, they are now in their fifth generation of farming and marketing. These days known as Domex Superfresh Growers, they continue to learn about today's consumer needs and expectations of safe and healthy food. As today’s global produce industry becomes more complex and offers more consumer choices, they remain singularly focused on the consumer eating experience and nature’s delicate balance. "Our experience, technology and passion are the soul of our family’s commitment."
Domex Superfresh Growers' farm locations and the superior fruits which they grow are unique in the World for today’s production agriculture. They produce 11 varieties of apples, 9 varieties of pears, 2 varieties of cherries and various summer fruits.

The apple harvest in Washington is now complete and the estimate for the State is 102 million boxes. This is down about 7 million boxes compared to last year. Loren Queen of Domex Superfresh Growers describes their harvest, "The fruit is very clean and nicely coloured and mostly larger than average. It was a very good year for growing great apples." The apples will be one to two sizes larger, resulting in less small fruit for the export market, particularly the Red Delicious which is up about 10% in volume and peaking on size 64 through 80.
Due to the smaller volume the price has started to rise and will continue to do so throughout the season as the smaller fruit becomes scarce. Superfresh Growers export about 33% of their fruit, the biggest markets being Canada and Mexico. The remaining 66% is sold throughout the United States with very even distribution across most states.

There has been a large increase in volume of Honey Crisp apples this season for Superfresh Growers, because they have a lot of young Honey Crisp Orchards coming into full production. Queen says that demand still out weighs supply so it is still profitable for most growers. The volumes of Gala will be down 7% and Golden Delicious will drop by about 10%.
The economic crisis as well as lots of small low grade apples affected last year's sales, but Queen is looking forward to this year's crop of large, high grade apples, "The World economy is also on the mend, and the expectation is that more people than ever will buy apples. It's an exiting time to be an apple grower."
