Indonesia: Two farmers detained since Idul Fitri for stealing watermelon

Kholil and Basar Suyanto, farmers in Kediri, East Java, have been detained since the last Idul Fitri holiday in September for stealing a watermelon from a nearby field, Tempointeraktif.com reported Thursday.

Kediri prosecutors' office said that the two farmers were not accompanied by lawyers and they did not ask for suspension of their detention.

"Because they have no lawyers, no one could file a request for the suspension of their detention," state prosecutor Agus Eko told Tempointeraktif.com on Thursday.

The two farmers were accused of taking one watermelon from Darwati's field. The police arrested the two while they were celebrating Idul Fitri Muslim festival in September. The two had their first trial on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Bar Association's Kediri chapter chief Nurbaidah blamed the prosecutors' office for bringing the case into the court and not trying to settle the issue out of court.

Nurbaidah also blamed the prosecutors' office for not providing free lawyers for the two poor farmers.
