International Tomato Symposium, 9 December in Agadir, Morocco
Protecting the positive image of Moroccan tomatoes

On 9 December in Agadir, Morocco there will be an International Tomato Symposium. In an interview with Mohamed Zahidi, chairman of the National Organisation of Producers of Fruit and Vegetables in Morocco, we spoke about the conference and the tomato industry in Morocco.

What is the goal of this conference?

Morocco is at the moment the biggest supplier of tomatoes to the EU. This is thanks to the dynamic and the professionalism of the growers. On the other hand most of the growers are from European origin.

Unfortunately Morocco does not talk enough about its strong points and gives its competitors too much room to influence the Moroccan image. That is the most important reason for this conference.

What is the purpose of this conference?

Morocco's tomato industry offers chances for businesses at different levels. There are possibilities for co-operation in growing. The current plan 'Morocco Green', is one of these possibilities.

Where are the growing areas?

The region of Agadir, is at the moment, the most important area for cultivation and export. This is because of the climate and fertile ground, besides this, there is plenty of water in the area. There are also other areas in the neighbourhood of Casablanca and the north and east of Morocco which are important for cultivation.

Is the growing done more in the open or in greenhouses?

The tomatoes which are for export, are pretty much all grown in greenhouses. Other products as well: peppers, cucumbers and courgettes. Products grown in open fields are potatoes, lettuce and strawberries.

What makes Morocco different than other countries in relation to the tomato industry?

Firstly, because Morocco is the closest African country to Europe. In addition Morocco has been exporting to Europe for 70 years. The relation between Morocco and Europe has become very strong.
