Increased production of cherries

World production of cherries for 2009 is estimated at 2.3 million tons, up 13% over the previous year. This mainly due to good weather conditions for the United States and Turkey, who hold 42% of the global production.

In Argentina, the Fundación Instituto de Mendoza of Rural Development (IDR) presented the results for an estimate of the cherry harvest in Mendoza for the 2009 season, with an expected production of 3.086 tons. The figure is lower by 65% to that obtained last year.

According to the provincial census of 2005 the total area planted with cherries in the province is of 1,226 hectares. The Uco Valley has 70% of the total area. The northern oasis covers 27% of total area, while the eastern and southern areas have a concentration of only 3%.

In Chile, the cherry season recently started in the earliest villages in the region of Coquimbo and Valparaiso, in week 44. Initial estimates of Decofrut foresee a drop in export volume for this fruit for the 2009/10 season, down from 20 to 22% over the volume of the previous season, reaching an approximate total of between 28,800 and 30,800 tons.
