Supply situation in North European vegetables normalizes

Tholen - Outside grown vegetables have been quite a hot item during the past three weeks, but this week the supply somewhat normalized. “Because of the rains and floods in the UK, demand for mainland iceberg lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli was strong. Savoy and white cabbage were also shipped to the UK more frequently,” says Kees van den Bosch of the Dutch company Freeland. “Due to cold and rainy weather in the Netherlands, the supply of broccoli from this source was also limited.”

Freeland has been shipping iceberg lettuce and cauliflower from the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland, while limited supply of broccoli from the Netherlands led to increased trade in German and Polish broccoli. In spite of the rains the quality and sizes of the iceberg lettuce have been satisfactory, with the majority of the crop available in size 10.

Next week, the supply of broccoli, cauliflower and iceberg lettuce is expected to further stabilize with larger quantities available from all sources. The season for North European Iceberg lettuce will run until the end of October or early November.
