Guatemalan Banana goes through Port of Chiapas en route to U.S.

Guatemalan Exporters Association says that the goods have met the health and safety standards required.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) granted food safety permits for the entry of Guatemalan bananas through the Port of Chiapas, from where they will be sent on to the United States.

The president of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport), Tulio Garcia, explained that the fruit will come from crops on the southern coast of the country, which has met the health and safety standards required by the Mexican authorities.

In an interview, the General Directorate of Customs also did the same to 'facilitate' the transportation of products from its place of origin to the shipping dock on the coast of Chiapas.

It is important to acknowledge the facilities given by the Mexican government and Chiapas, which avoid the fruit being affected by transfer delays.

With this arrangement, he said, problems in exporting the product which they currently have to send to the Californian market in the U.S. will be solved.

The representative of Agexport mentioned that ships with refrigerated containers docked at Puerto Quetzal, Escuintla have experianced problems, and they found that the best alternative was to send the fruit by the Port of Chiapas, for which they have already taken the necessary steps.

He said that next year they will start such operations, even though they already have the necessary authorization from SAGARPA and Mexican government customs in health and safety and income from the international bridge of Suchiate II.

He recognized the availability of the Integral Port Authority (API) of the Port of Chiapas, which is prepared to provide this service by having the necessary infrastructure.
