USDA funding sweet potato chip
The US Department of Agriculture is funding genomics research into sweet potatoes that could help plant breeders develop new varieties, and has awarded $120,000 to support a post-graduate research position.
Conducted by the Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Unit of the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, the research will seek DNA markers in the sweet potato that could be used to develop new varieties for enhanced nutrition and improved resistance to climate change, environmental stress, pests, and diseases.
The studies will involve using high-throughput DNA sequencing to develop a sweet potato microarray for studying gene expression.
The markers, microarrays, and gene expression data should help breeders of sweet potatoes identify and use new selected traits in their breeding lines.
