Demand for Chinese pomelos is on the increase

The Chinese pomelo season is well under way in the Fujian province - September until January- and the prices have risen quickly since mid October.

The pomelos were affected by drought early on in the growing season and very wet weather during harvesting, this has caused a lot of pomelos to split and so the volume of the harvest has decreased.

More farmers chose to store the pomelo rather than sell it all immediately due to the increasing price caused by stronger foreign demand. Vivien Li, Sales Manager at Hengfeng Fresh Produce Co. Ltd. estimates that the price will reach its peak in December 2009 because of high demand both in the domestic and export markets.

Domestic demand is so strong that more and more packers are selling within China, also due to the rise in shipping rates the cost to foreign consumers has risen. Vivien says that the shipping of pomelos may end in December this season instead of in January as is normal due to the adverse weather conditions this season.
