PhotosIndia: Consumers hard hit as veggie prices skyrocket
Vegetables and foodgrains are on an upward spiral in the city, causing many a household to reorganise its monthly budget for food. As compared to last year, the price of vegetables like potatoes, cauliflower and fenugreek has gone up by Rs 30 to Rs 100 a kg in the wholesale market.
At present, the retail prices of potatoes and cauliflower are around Rs 20 a kg, followed by cabbage, tomatoes, green peas and fenugreek with a price of Rs 10 per kg or per bunch.
The reason for the high prices are the interrupted rain patterns that the state witnessed this monsoon, which damaged the agricultural produce.
Suvarna Inamdar, a homemaker said, "If this continues, the high prices are likely to prove a big burden. As consumers we have little option and the government hasn't even been formed yet."
