US: FastStart becoming ambassadors for economic growth in area
Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret said he hoped all along that companies attracted to the state in part by the new work force training program FastStart would become ambassadors for other economic growth. His hopes are materializing.
FastStart develops and implements comprehensive work force programs that include employee recruitment, screening, training development and delivery. In essence, the state delivers a turnkey work force to the employer.
Moret recruited Jeff Lynn last year from a similar program in Georgia to direct FastStart in Louisiana.
Though expansion projects like V-Vehicle Co. in Ouachita Parish, Gardner Denver Inc. in Monroe and Conagra's sweet potato processing plant were given large cash incentives to come to northeastern Louisiana, some of the company's top executives have said FastStart was the difference maker.
"We're banking on that program," Horst Metz, vice president of assembly operations for V-Vehicle, said last summer. "We're coming to an area we don't know and a work force we're unfamiliar with, so FastStart became a decisive factor."
"I can't emphasize enough the importance of tailoring the (work force training program) for us," said Frank Varasano, chief executive of V-Vehicle.
And now Gardner Denver's chief executive, who chose the company's Thomas Products Division plant at the Monroe Air Industrial Park for a 230-job expansion, has publicly lauded FastStart on Wall Street.
During the company's recent third quarter earnings call, Gardner Denver CEO Barry Pennypacker told analysts: "The relocation of our operation in Sheboygan, Wis., to Louisiana has been progressing exceptionally well, in part due to the training support provided by the state of Louisiana's FastStart program. We have begun to assemble a world-class team of folks focused on customer satisfaction down there in Monroe, La."
