US: Citrus crop looking good for growers, buyers, estimates show

A forecast indicating that Florida’s orange crop will be 14.5 percent less than last year’s was welcomed as good news by citrus growers.

Even better news for Indian River District growers, the grapefruit forecast is for only a 9 percent decline from last year’s crop,

Doug Bournique, executive vice president of the Indian River Citrus League, which produces 70 percent of Florida’s grapefruit, said a crop too small limits growers’ profit potential while a crop too plentiful would push down the price structure.

“Like in the Three Bears, the forecast for this crop is just right,” he said.

The 2009 crop estimate, released Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, indicates Florida will produce 136 million boxes of oranges, 19.8 million boxes of grapefruit and 5.9 million boxes of specialty fruit.
