TFOAM EU invites you to congress on ‘Organic Farming in Times of Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Global food Crisis’ - programme is online now!
Belgium: European Organic Congress: bringing organic farming’s contribution onto the climate agenda
This December will be hot on climate issues: IFOAM EU Group (1) organises its 2nd European Organic Congress (2) on December 1, focussing this time on the potential of organic production to face major challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss and the global food crisis. The second week of the month will be marked by the start of the UN Climate Change Conference.
The IFOAM EU-organised Congress will be opened by the EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel with presentation of the Commission’s views on How to address the agriculture challenges within the CAP and Copenhagen process.
The following plenary session will focus on the role of organic food and farming as a leading model of sustainable food systems. As special guests, Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Co-Chair International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management, and Hans Herren, Millenium Institute, will present their views on climate policies and food security. Additionally, the workshops will bring deeper insight into the food business’ approaches to climate-friendly practices and will encourage discussions on the future of the CAP and how EU policies must be tailored in order to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.
The December 1st forum will bring together high-level representatives from the EU institutions and about 200 participants representing organic farming associations, the organic processing and retailing business and other interested people and organisations from the EU Member States and beyond. On-line registration will be open from 1st of October. The Congress’ draft program is already available on the website: www.organic-congress-ifoameu.org.
