Pakistan: Mango export target likely to be surpassed
Export of mango is in progress and export target of 125,000 metric tonnes set for the current year is likely to surpassed by a wide margin.
According to Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) sources here, 95,000 metric tonnes mango was exported till the end of third week of the current month.
The sources said that 20,000 metric tonnes was exported during the first three weeks of August.
During June-July, since the mango export took off, the total volumes of mango export stand at around 70,000 to 75,000 tones which is almost equal to total export achieved by the country previous year during 5 months of export period indicating brisk ongoing pace during the current season.
They said that export of the king of the fruits this year is much higher as compared to last year as its export during the same period last year stood around 60,000 metric tonnes as compared to 95,000 metric tonness this year.
The outstanding increase was attributed by leading exporters on account of growing demand of the mango in Gulf countries and Iran besides higher rates of the fruit during the current season.
Exporters claimed that the mango export target of $80 million by the year 2011-12 would be achievable if the Ministry of Commerce and MINFAL extends cooperation and required support to the exporters towards enhancing export goals.
The sources said keeping in view availability of mango in the local market and its demand in the international market, it can be said that the target would be surpassed, as its export would continue till September 15.
The sources said a comprehensive plan is being implemented for doubling earnings from mango exports during next five years.
