Uganda: Earning millions from growing mushrooms
Eva Nabawanuka last year she won an international excellence award for female creativity in rural life.
It was awarded by the Women’s World Summit Foundation in Switzerland. Nabawanuka has come a long way in just six years. She started growing mushrooms in a rented house in Kawanda, Bombo road. She had done a mushroom growing course at Kawanda Research Center.
Having given up secondary education after senior four, she joined the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) and Kawanda Research Centre in 2000.
After the course Nabawanuka says she started growing mushrooms for sale. She says she uses chemicals to produce spawn and mushroom seedlings.
Nabawanuka says the demand for mushrooms both locally and international is high. With the help of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Nabawanuka became a trainer of mushroom growers and her role and influence in the sector has been on the rise.
Nabawanuka who spoke to Ultimate Media in a wide-ranging interview says she has trained over 200 women in mushroom growing. She says she has built a house and bought a small car using money from the growing and selling of mushrooms.
