Poland: situation at Warsaw Wholesale Market "Bronisze"
Warsaw - Summer is already here, one can say looking at fresh produce assortment at Warsaw Wholesale Market "Bronisze". Plums (‘Opal’ i ‘Ruth Gerstetter’) and apples (‘Yellow Transparent’ and ‘Early Geneva’ should be ready for harvest next week) from the new crop are offered earlier than in 2006. Supply of domestic peaches and apricots is very limited and many of those fruit come from import.
Supply of blueberries from commercial plantations grows steadily and prices declined almost by half comparing to 2006, because fruit started to ripe much earlier due to the warm spring. All other fruit – except sour cherries – are more expensive comparing to previous season, e.g. raspberries – by 40-50% (rainy weather caused problems with fruit ripening and harvesting).
Peaches and nectarines are available from import. Imported peaches are more expensive than domestic, while apricots – cheaper (though good quality fruit are offered for 1,27-184 €/kg). Nectarines are slightly cheaper than peaches. Watermelons remain the cheapest fruit at Warsaw Wholesale Market "Bronisze" – 0,31-0,39 €/kg.
As far as this year spring caused many problems in fruit orchards, vegetable production looks very good, both in volume and assortment. Young potatoes are much cheaper than in 2006 (0,10-13 €/kg comparing to 0,31 €/kg), while cabbage and cauliflowers – more expensive because of cold weather recently (vegetables grew more slowly, so supply is smaller and prices higher).
