Opportunities for horticulture in Portugal
The circumstances controlling production in south west Alentejo are first class. Cultivation takes place in a park where water and soil quality are among the best in Europe. Also the micro climate allows certain products, such as strawberries, to grow all year round. In addition there are strict conditions regulating the use of chemicals, water and waste recycling together with the preservation of bio diversity.
More information is available from the Vereniging Tuinbouwers Zuidwest-Alentejo.

The horticultural sector of the Portuguese region southwest of Alentejo intend to double the turnover during the period from 2009 to 2014. About 80% of the turnover, presently about 60 million euro, is realised through export. Growers concentrate on high quality products for Northern European niche markets.
