Chilean apple shipments drop in the U.S.
A decrease of 17.4%, of last season's exports of Chilean apples to the US ,which is a record to date, was reported this week by the Market Intelligence System in the Chilean Fruit SIMFRUIT.
The website indicates that to date there have been 26,707 tons of Chilean apples shipped to market, unlike in 2008 when exports totalled 32,614 tons.
Other markets which registered negative for Chilean apples to date are Latin America, where shipments fell from 70,864 to 58,312 tonnes (-17.7%), Middle East, 58,340 to 48,069 tonnes (-17.6%) and Canada in 7933 to 6851 tonnes (-13.6%).
In total, considering all the markets, shipments of Chilean apples fell from 336,182 tons in the 2007/2008 season to 309,416 tons in the 2008/2009 season, representing a decrease of -8%.
The Market Intelligence System of the Chilean Fruit SIMFRUIT is a project that manages and delivers information in the Chilean fruit industry, which is backed by ASOEX, FEDEFRUTA and CORFO INNOVA.
European Apple
Among the variables which caused the lower shipments of Chilean apples, as mentioned, was the abundant local European apple production, in particular, the large Polish apple production this year (+97%) compared to last season, which joined with a demand which was more restricted because of the economic crisis affecting Europe.
Poland, the main producer of apples in Europe and a major supplier of this fruit in the East, also made and increase with 106% more volume than in the previous season.
With regard to varieties that compete with the supply of the Southern Hemisphere, the analysis highlights that there is a large stock of Red Delicious (71,577 tons), representing a 39% increase over the previous season.
"Only a good block size, quality and condition, will have a chance in the European market during the month of May. This month is expected to be competitive, with abundant supply and prices which were heavily dependent on the condition of the fruit. The transfer of low prices of imports to final consumers through supermarkets and shops will be crucial to boost consumption of the apple during May and thus helping reduce the stocks of both local apples and imports."
