Italy, organic fruits in "Snack Fruit" dispensers

Starting from this week 150 "Snack Fruit" dispensers, placed in schools and workplaces in Italy, will be exclusively supplied with organic fruits at the same price of conventional products. A great opportunity for schools to stress the importance of fruit and vegetables' cosumption for human health as well as that of organic farming for the environment's "health".

Ready-to-eat boxes of fruit salads and fresh apples coming from organic farming are replacing the products that have been distributed until now, coming from integrated productions.

Some 150 schools and workplaces will be involved in this operation - the first in Italy of such importance - in the framework of the national pilot project "Snack Fruit" promoted by the Ministry for Education, University and Research and the Ministry for Labour, Health and Social Policies, as well as the "Fresh Break" project launched by Emilia Romagna region.

Furthermore, the price of organic fruits will be unchanged: 1.50 euros for fruit salad (150g boxes with 4-5 kinds of fruit) and 1.00 euro for sliced Fuji apples. Fruit salads currently include apples, kiwifruits, strawberries and pineapple, but in spring and summer cherries, apricots, peaches and nectarines will be present too.

Fruit boxes are certified as "organic farming" along the whole production process, from cultivation to packaging.

This choice is particularly important as it is in line with the goals of the "Snack Fruit" project to guarantee the opportunity to choose healthy foods and to spread education about a healthy diet.

The organic produce allows to widen the educational message by bringing the attention on the effects of naturalness in production processes for both human health and environment.

As a consequence, the presence of organic fruits in the dispensers is a further element of qualification for the project and meets the requests put forward by many teachers.
