EU: Farmers set fire to five tons of tomatoes and block the A7 motorway
It happened at lunchtime on Wednesday in Níjar, Almería in protest at the liberalisation of E.U. borders
Some 50 farmers from the Almeria area blocked the A7 motorway at Campohermoso in Níjar at 1300 yesterday in a protest against the E.U. liberalization of the fruit and vegetable sector which will allow cheaper Moroccan imports into Spain.
The protest was called by the Asaja and Coag farmers unions and the protestors set some 5,000 kilos of tomatoes on fire. The road was blocked for about half an hour.
The farmers claim that 10% of jobs in the industry in Spain will be lost.
Earlier protests in Almería city last year resulted in 21 injuries.
