Kids Learn About Geography and Mangos Through New Interactive Game
National Mango Board Teaches a Lesson in Produce

The National Mango Board (NMB) recently launched the interactive game, Jango Geography, to educate children about mangos and the countries from which they originate.  The goal is to increase mango consumption and teach kids about geography and the health and flavor benefits of mangos through the game. Jango Mango, the NMB’s global ambassador serves as a guide to walk children through this entertaining and educational online activity, which can be found at www.mango.org/geography.

“Interactive games are a great way to connect with kids.  This fun learning activity introduces kids to the healthy fun and flavor of mangos to help us create lifelong, loyal mango lovers,” said Wendy McManus, director of marketing for the National Mango Board.  “With the help of this game, children can interact with mangos on a whole new level.”

Jango Geography is packed with eye-catching characters and six different games that allow learning experiences, such as:

·         Encouraging knowledge retention and use of short term memory;

·         Testing motor skills and eye-hand coordination as children navigate through games;

·         Improving detail and comparison skills;

·         Sharpening reaction time; and

·         Teaching abstract thinking.

Jango Geography also contains educational maps, quick facts and an activity booklet that includes coloring sheets. The activity booklet is easily downloadable for parents and teachers.

In Jango Geography, children learn numerous mango facts such as countries of origin and their capital cities, languages spoken, currency and landmarks; Kids also learn fun facts about the mango including the history, how to select one, nutrition facts and even how it’s consumed in different countries.

Jango Geography is one of many NMB initiatives to teach kids about healthy eating habits through the use of mangos. The NMB features a kid section on Mango.org with additional games, quizzes, videos and informational facts, many of which are a result of a partnership in 2007 with Scholastic’s Instructor magazine that educated children about the world of mangos through activities in the classroom. The Rising Mango Star Video Contest is a national contest that challenges 8-14 year olds to create a unique mango recipe and video and submit it to NMB for a chance to be on TV’s video magazine Health & Home Report.  It launched earlier this year and is another initiative to engage kids and get them excited about mangos. In the true spirit of health and fitness, Jango Mango will run in the mascot race later this month during the kid’s day of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C.  Earlier this year, Jango Mango participated in the U.S. Youth Soccer Playoffs in Raleigh, N.C. and Portland, ME.

The board is currently promoting the launch of Jango Geography  to food, kid and education editors at daily publications across the country along with online food media.
