India: Cashew production may go up by 10%: govt
The country's cashew production is likely to increase by up to 10% to reach 7.30 lakh tons in 2008-09 fiscal, a government official said. "Cashew production, which was growing at 8-10% for the last 2 years under various projects in the National Horticulture Mission programme, will continue this year from last year's 6.65 lakh metric ton," Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development Director Venketesh Hubballi told PTI.
However, the actual picture would come out only by November-December after the flowering season, he added. Hubballi noted that the area under cashew has increased by 25,000 hectare from 8.68 lakh hectares. Besides, he said old cashew trees spread over 20,000 hectares have been replanted.
Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the major cashew producing states among the 15 other state in the country. The domestic consumption of cashew or the wonder nut, mainly used in many Indian sweets, pastries and gravies, would also grow in the range of 8-10% in the current fiscal, Hubballi said. In 2007-08, consumption stood at 1.66 lakh tons. Of the total 6.65 lakh metric ton raw cashew nut only 20-25% is the out put of the kernel.
Cashew kernel export is also expected to grow in value terms at Rs 2,500 crore against Rs 2,288.90 crore in 2007-08, according to the estimates by the Cashew Promotion Council of India. In terms of quantity, exports are likely to go up by about 5% at about 1,20,000 tons compared to 1,14,340 tons during the previous fiscal, it said.
