Malaysia: Mushroom boost to immune system
Q: MY mother had her left breast removed because of breast cancer a year ago. What are the nutrients needed for immune system and better recovery? A: Breast cancer refers to malignant (cancerous) growth that forms in the tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that produce milk). It affects one in eight women during their lives and many women with breast cancer will undergo some type of surgery as part of their treatment. Current research findings suggest that physical activity, a healthy diet and a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of recurrent breast cancer.
Breast cancer patients are advised to eat a well balanced diet that includes antioxidant-rich foods and exercise regularly. It can increase energy levels, help to combat the side effects of treatment (chemotherapy or radiation) such as fatigue and also promote a faster recovery after surgery. Beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and selenium are antioxidants that help to prevent the free radical damage that is associated with cancer. These anti-free radical nutrients are particularly important to breast cancer patients who usually have low immune function.
Apart from that, mushroom nutrition can also help modulate the immune system of cancer patients. The mushroom, Coriolus versicolor which is also known as yun zhi in China contains two types of beta-glucans, namely Polysaccharide Krestin and Polysaccharide-peptide that boost immune cell production, reduce chemotherapy symptoms and promote anti-tumour activity.
Coriolus versicolor also provides enzymes and secondary metabolites which play important roles in maintaining, protecting and restoring immune function. A biomass mushroom (whole mushroom) product which is organically cultivated promises a combined advantage of beta-glucans, enzymes and secondary metabolites as well as its safety and quality.
