New fruit vending machines being tried out in Liverpool schools to tackle childhood obesity are proving a huge hit. Since the start of May, seven city schools have introduced the fat-free drive with bananas, grapes, pears, strawberries, plums and oranges on offer to pupils. The machines have hit the jackpot with supplies gobbled up so fast they have to be restocked three times a day.
In one week, Kensington’s Academy of St Francis of Assisi shifted 275 portions of grapes, 101 bottles of locally sourced water, 43 bananas, 34 apples and 25 satsumas.
The scheme is a joint city council and Liverpool PCT £2m health drive to combat figures which show 20.7% of boys and 14.8% of girls are obese by the time they are 11.
