US: EPA recognizes Food Lion supermarkets

Food Lion says it owns more than half of the 1,300 grocery stores nationwide that have achieved an Energy Star rating by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Food Lion owns 703 of the supermarkets that have achieved the rating, which recognizes energy-conservation efforts. More than 310 of the stores are in North Carolina.

Commercial buildings that earn the Energy Star use an average of 35 percent less energy and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than typical buildings.

Food Lion employs numerous methods to conserve energy, including demand-control systems, automated lights, and energy-efficient fixtures and bulbs.

"Energy conservation has always been a key goal for Food Lion," says Kyle Mitchell, Food Lion vice president of store development. "We proudly lead the way with energy-conservation initiatives that encourage other companies to conserve energy, too."

Food Lion, founded in Salisbury in 1957, is a subsidiary of Salisbury-based Delhaize America Inc., the U.S. division of Delhaize Group (NYSE:DEG) of Belgium.

Food Lion, which operates 1,300 supermarkets, has more than 73,000 employees in 11 states.
