India: PepsiCo starts processing of Kinnow in Punjab
PepsiCo India has started processing of Kinnows at their Hoshiarpur plant for producing Kinnow concentrate which will be used in Tropicana range of juices.
"The processing operations will go on till end of March. PepsiCo plans to produce Kinnow concentrate which will be used in Tropicana range of Juices. For this purpose, the company intends to purchase around 6,000 MT of mature Kinnow fruit, mostly from small to medium farmers," Sushil Sankhiyan, GM, Agri Business, PepsiCo India, said in a release issued here today.
He further said, "We have initiated the procurement process and are approaching farmers and explaining them the requirements in terms of sweetness and maturity through handouts and pamphlets."
The company would be processing Kinnow in the Hoshiarpur plant till March end and then would be processing tomatoes and other seasonal horticultural crops.
The plant with 400 MTs per day capacity has been set up by the Punjab government to provide available and alternative market channel to the Kinnow growers and farmers cultivating other horticultural crops to cushion them against fluctuating market prices and thus assuring them of a timely payment from PepsiCo.
PepsiCo recently signed an MoU with Punjab Agro Juices Ltd (PAJL) for operating the multi-fruit processing facility set up at Hoshiarpur.
