Busloads tour Cravo’s first house in India

When Cravo’s Rajender Kumar first conceived of organizing educational tours for people to check out Cravo’s first project in India, he had no idea the response would be so overwhelming. What initially started as a plan to bring in one bus load of guests quickly became two, and eventually registration had to be cut off due to the high demand. In the end two bus loads of guests came, in addition to individuals who came on their own by car. In total, over 100 people attended the educational tours on Jan 24-25.

Namdhari Fresh is growing vegetable crops using the first Cravo house developed in India. The project is located in Idhalli & Bidadi in the Bangalore region of Karnataka. Namdhari Fresh is using the flat roof model from Cravo, which is the simplest and most inexpensive design. Over the past year many people expressed interest in seeing the system in action in India. Namdhari Fresh agreed to allow Cravo to bring a group through the project, leading to the organization of the educational tours. Guests included top individuals in agribusiness, farmers, consultants, technocrats and officials.

“It was a great effort, it was important to see the structure actually working in Indian conditions,” said Rouhi Hyati Dahiya, ex-director of the International Horticulture Innovation and Training. At the Bidadi farm guests were able to see both conventional greenhouse production systems and the retractable roof. Throughout the day visitors interacted with top management of Namdhari on various aspects of fresh produce production. Visitors then went to the Idhalli facility located north of Karnataka to see the Cravo system recently installed to produce hybrid tomato seeds.

“What the Namdhari have done is brave in taking the first call and display of magnanimity by sharing their experience with fellow professionals. Thank you Namdhari Group. This thought process of selective deployment of protection has opened up a Pandora’s Box. Many variables are possible. Hats off for having taken the plunge first. We expect you to innovate further and consolidate the lead established by you. This is just the beginning in India…” - Pradeep Ganu, Advisor, Nurserymen Association of India.

Namdhari Seeds is a market leader in the Indian vegetable seed industry and a leading exporter of fresh vegetables and vegetable / flower seeds. Namdhari Fresh is a unit of Namdhari Seeds which export premium quality fresh vegetables to domestic customers. Presently, more than 40 different vegetables and fruits are being cultivated by Namdhari Fresh at various productions centres across the country. The different agro-climatic zones enable them to produce most vegetables year-round. European standards of Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) are strictly followed at the production level.

Cravo creates better production systems for plants to grow by combining the benefits of nature and the benefits of protection. Using the retractable roof production system Cravo works to develop solutions to challenges of conventional production. As a Canadian, family-run business with 40 years of experience covering 5 continents in the fruit, berry, vegetable, flower and reforestation sectors, Cravo is well positioned to help growers worldwide.
