Grown across New Zealand’s best kiwifruit areas, kiwiberry orchards are producing an exciting category that combines the taste and health benefits of kiwifruit with the consumer convenience of a berry. “As part of Seeka, we are the biggest kiwifruit grower in New Zealand, and pack about a quarter of the national crop each season. We know how to grow a great product, and deliver it to the markets on time and in top condition,” says Annmarie.
“This is the third season SeekaFresh has been handling the new kiwiberry category. We have seen how popular kiwiberries are with consumers and retailers, and have organised new orchards to come into production to fulfil that demand. Importantly for retailers, we manage the full production and supply cycle. This allows us to manage product flow to match retail plans, while fully managing product quality.
“We grow the kiwiberries, pick them when they are ripe, then on the same day chill the berries, grade and pack them ready for retail before sending them direct to the retailers and wholesalers. This is a unique service which delivers real benefits to the markets and our orchard owners,” says Annmarie.
Sweet, ready-to-eat
Packed in 125gm clear clamshells which typically contain about eight-to-ten berries, SeekaFresh kiwiberries are stored and sold in the chilled berry section. Smaller and sweeter than conventional green kiwifruit, SeekaFresh kiwiberries are available from late February through to mid-April. This makes then a great addition to the late berry season, while preparing the markets for the start of the Southern Hemisphere kiwifruit season.
Kiwiberries have a smooth, fuzz-free edible skin and can be eaten like a grape. Because they don’t need peeling, kiwiberries are the versatile fruit that’s perfect for a quick, no-mess snack, adds a dash of flavour to salads or pop them into a smoothie for a burst of flavour. They are a delicious super food that’s high in fibre and a good source of vitamin A and calcium, as well as being a rich source of vitamin C.
