Spanish stonefruit season underway

Last week was the first week that supplies of peaches and nectarines from Spain were available. The season has been off to a promising start, with good sizes and high sugar levels observed.

“Everything is set for this to be a promising season,” said Laurence Maillard of Regal'in Europe. “We believe that we'll have a 20 percent increase in production for flat peaches and nectarines.” Sugar levels, sizes and appearance of fruit are all looking good, and Maillard noted an uptick in demand from last season. The demand has been such that Regal'in Europe will expand the reach of its Regal'in™ brand of fruit to retail stores in France, United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, Poland, Malaysia and Singapore.

“To accommodate this higher demand, we've increased the number of sales offices in Spain and France,” said Maillard. “We also expect our volumes to be more than those from the past three seasons.” The variety of fruit offered will also increase, as Regal'in™ round peaches and nectarines will now be available in France.

“Last year was also a good season despite the Russian embargo on European goods,” said Maillard. “The prices we delivered to growers were higher than those for other stonefruit, and that's why we got more interest from growers and marketers. With better fruit sales, we saw increased demand from retailers.” The brand has done so well that Regal'in Europe plans to expand the selection of fruit offered. Currently, Regal'in™ has white and yellow peaches and nectarines (round and flat) that are semi-sweet and have high sugar levels, pleasant aromas, attractive appearances, crunchy textures and a long shelf lives. Maillard said that Regal'in™ also corresponds to cherries, apricots, apples, plums, red nectarines and red peaches.

“For our customers, it doesn't matter the name of the variety, what is important is that they have a fantastic experience with flavorful fruit,” said Maillard. “We are convinced that all of the fruit we offer meets consumer expectations.”
