50% longer shelf life for bell peppers

This year at the Cravo Demonstration and Education greenhouse, a comparison on bell and lamuyos pepper production was conducted in cooperation with some of the world's leading seed suppliers.

On October 11, 2014, Cravo transplanted the young plants into 2 different areas in the retractable roof greenhouse. The first area had a retractable white roof covering with no insect net underneath and the second area had stationary insect net.

On May 5th, 2015 the "Center for Food Research and Development" was commissioned to do a shelf life test on the Estefania variety from Syngenta. They collected peppers from the Cravo demonstration greenhouse and from a leading grower in Culiacan.

In comparison to the peppers from a conventional nethouse, bell peppers grown in a retractable roof greenhouse had a:
  • 50% longer shelf life... from 8 to 12 days
  • 13%-21% increase in the wall thickness
  • 25%-27% reduction in weight loss over 15 days
  • 27%-28% increase in firmness over 15 days
"Not only has the retractable roof improved the fruit quality and shelf life, but production is continuing at least 2 months longer than what is possible in conventional nethouses", said Cravo's Benjamin Martin.
