potential competition of Mexico
Chile major exporter of table grapes in counterseason to the US

The world's main producers of table grapes are China, Turkey, Italy, Chile, US and South Africa. According to statistics of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US. In 2006, China reached a production of 6,5 million tons of table grapes, increasing in almost half million to the previous year. Both Chile and South Africa which are the main exporters of the Southern Hemisphere kept constant exports during the last years: 200,000 tons from South Africa and more than a million from Chile since 2001.

Between December and May, Chile is the main provider of grapes to the US market. This due to the counter-season of the North American market which is provided mainly by the Californian grapes. For the year 2006, table grape exports from Chile had its major level in March, with 140,000 tons approximately. Another provider of US is Mexico which exports between May and July. South African Exports increased to the end of the decade of the 90s, but currently there are no meaningful statistics.

According to a study by Laura Nahuelhual M. at the Universidad Austral de Chile, Mexico increased its market share in spite of the consolidation of the Chilean supply. Particularly important is Mexico´s supply between April and May. In addition, Argentina is also a potential supplier but statistics are still not significant to overpass Chilean supply.

Based on reports by USDA and Universidad Austral de Chile.
