Amounted to 336,000 tons

Peru: Avocado production grew by 16% in 2014

Last year, Sierra Exportadora developed 29 business plans based on this fruit, and in the first four months of 2015 the company already has 12 plans.

Avocado production in 2014 reached 336,000 tons, 16% more when compared to the 288,000 tons produced in the same period of 2013, said Sierra Exportadora.

This figure is due to the increase in production area in the regions of La Libertad (+31%), Lima (+11%) and Ica (+14%), which have allowed the country to have a higher offer for the external market.

The president of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velasquez, said that while having high volumes was important, the quality issue was even more important because this is what sells the most. In this regard, he indicated that they should continue working on this specific issue.

He said that during 2014, via Sierra Exportadora's National Hass Avocado and Other Fruit Industry and Innovation Programme, they had been able to develop 29 business plans based on avocado; which generated $90,199,581 Soles in sales and $56,997,134 Soles (US $18,109,506) in exports.

Meanwhile, in the first four months of the year, the company has 12 business plans based on the avocado.

Moreover, to promote this fruit, the District Municipalities of Limatambo and Mollepata, both in the Cusco region, organized the Regional Hass and Fuerte Avocado Fair with the support of Sierra Exportadora.

Both municipalities, in partnership with Sierra Exportadora, have been working in marketing, technical assistance training, crop management, and have been supporting the avocado chain, as it is the one with the most productive potential in the region, with the aim of reaching agricultural exports.

One of the associations with which Sierra Exportadora is working is the Association of Avocado Fruit Growers from Limatambo Valley in Cusco, where they are carrying out technical assistance in avocado crop management and marketing with the 70 partners of the valley of Limatambo.
